When is it enough?

Dear Enroot Community,

It is with great sadness that we are collectively processing another national tragedy, yet another horror in our nation as a result of the school shooting that has taken place in Uvalde, Texas.

There is anger. There is devastation. There is despair. It is also not lost on us that today is the anniversary of George Floyd.

As we process yesterday’s tragedy in Uvalde, Texas, Enroot stands in solidarity with the families and loved ones of the 21 victims, which include 19 children and 2 adults.

We keep watching time and again the way in which innocent children and adults, living their everyday lives, fall victim to random violence including hate crimes and attacks as a result of racism. Just this month, we endured the news of elderly Black individuals killed in Buffalo, New York; the shooting at a Taiwanese church in California, and now the loss of innocent elementary school children in Texas. It has been 10 year since the Sandy Hook school shooting, yet we see no change or reform.

When is it enough? How many letters to our community should we write to convey our sadness and frustration.

We stand with the Latinx community as they grieve the loss of their loved ones. We see the resiliency of the community as they are coming together to support one another. Grief and healing will last generations.

As an organization serving immigrant youth, we hope that parents and students are able to find mental health support and resources regardless of their immigration status. At Enroot, we know that creating a sense of safety is the first step to creating a sense of belonging for those we serve.

We are a community that checks on each other, and watches out for one another. We continue to grieve the loss of many innocent lives.

Today we send our hearts out to Uvalde, Texas.

Sincerely,

Rose Francois
Interim Executive Director
